The Beginning of Be Well

Updated: Mar 15, 2022

Hi, I'm Dianna and here's my story. Though I’m launching Be Well Health Coaching LLC today, my journey actually began over 6 years ago. It was early 2015, my son was approaching his first birthday, I was excelling at my Federal government career, and life was very busy. Out of nowhere, what started as a stomach virus, led to months of not feeling well, and ended with a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis. The doctor told me that in order to manage my symptoms, I would need to be on medication...indefinitely. It felt like a life sentence and I was devastated. This should have been a wake-up call to start prioritizing my health, but I had a 1-year old, was recently promoted at work, and was busy with many other responsibilities. I didn’t have time to be “sick.” So, I took the medication and continued on with my life. Time went by and I was doing…fine. The medication seemed to be working, I went on to have a baby girl, and continued working hard to be the best mother, wife, and professional I could be.

Fast forward to the fall of 2018. I constantly didn’t feel well. Between migraines, bouts of nausea, and other random symptoms, it felt like something was always wrong. For a while I just assumed that I was catching whatever bug was going around at daycare, but finally I decided to schedule an annual physical to figure out what might be going on. On Christmas eve of that year my life changed forever. After a

panicked call from my doctor, I ended up in the hospital with extremely elevated kidney levels and little explanation as to what could be causing the problem. Several doctor appointments, blood tests, and a kidney biopsy later it was determined that the medication I was put on back in 2015 to treat my ulcerative colitis had caused an allergic reaction and permanently damaged my kidneys. This was finally the wake-up call I needed. I immediately changed my eating habits to a plant-based diet, and began making other lifestyle changes to be more physically active, get more sleep, and reduce stress so that I could give my body the best chance at recovery. During this time my passion for nutrition and wellness really came alive. Within a few weeks of making these changes, I felt better than I had in years. I had more energy, less digestive issues, and my kidney levels began to come down. It was amazing and I wanted to learn more. It was at this point that I decided to take a leap of faith and pursue a Masters of Science in Nutrition Education, which would ultimately lead to a total career change. About halfway through my Masters program, I enrolled in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition Health Coach Training Program with the plan of launching my own Health Coaching practice.

Be Well was born out of the health struggles and challenges I’ve faced over the past 6 years. My health isn't perfect, but wellness is a journey. The stress from COVID-19 caused a flare-up of both my ulcerative colitis and kidney issues. This set-back wasn't ideal, but I continue to make my health a priority, and am always looking for ways to improve my overall physical, mental, and emotional wellness. I’ve learned a lot over the past several years through my formal education and life experiences, and my dream for Be Well Health Coaching is that I can take everything I’ve learned and share it with as many people as possible. My hope is that we can work together to figure out how to make you feel your best. You are the expert on you and my role is to be the guide on the side helping you troubleshoot issues, set goals, and keep you motivated and accountable as you pursue your own wellness journey.
