Setting Intentions for a Healthy and Happy 2023!

Happy New Year! I hope you had a joyful and restful holiday season with your friends and family to end 2022 and are excited about all 2023 has to offer. Often a new year brings thoughts of “new you” whether that be from a physical health perspective (e.g., starting to eat better, exercise more, or drink less alcohol a.k.a. Dry January), a mental health perspective (e.g., stressing less, meditating or praying more, or getting more sleep), or perhaps you have other goals related to your career, finances, or relationships. Whatever it is, a new year typically signifies a new beginning or fresh start. Which can be exciting, however, did you know that only 19% of individuals keep up with their New Year’s resolutions? Why do you think that is?

Primarily because resolutions are hard and fast goals that are either achieved or not. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you shouldn’t have goals. I’m simply encouraging you to think bigger and broader, and not in terms of “failing” or “achieving.”

Consider setting intentions instead. Intentions are broader ideas. Think of them more like guiding principles for you to live by.

Here are some examples:

Resolution: Give up junk food.

Intention: I will fuel my body with the right foods to help me thrive and feel my best.

Resolution: Go to the gym every day during the week.

Intention: I will invest in my physical and mental health through consistent exercise.

Resolution: Get a promotion at work.

Intention: I will build my knowledge and skills so that I feel more fulfilled in my career.

The Institute for Integrative Nutrition further compares resolutions/goals with intentions. See below.
